In her fourth solo exhibition at VAN HORN, Sabrina Fritsch shows brilliant new works, which refer to the additive colour space RGB, under the title “Romeo Golf Bravo”. CMYK, greyscales and RGB are colour spaces that are used in i.e. Photoshop, printing and on computer screens. They are the basis for digital images and for printing templates. Several groups of works have emerged from the examination of these colour spaces in recent years. In the process, the conditions of the colour system are transformed into independent motifs. Within the framework of their formal limitation to the colours red, green and blue, the large-format paintings emerge as permutations of geometric patterns and develop their tension between formal precision and painterly feel.

Through the questions that the painter Sabrina Fritsch asks herself in the 21st century, she explores a form of contemporary painting that develops from the colour systems and yet is completely independent.
What happens to paintings when they are reproduced and depicted?
What happens when painters do not mix colours as needed, but limit themselves to the basic colours?
How do colours show themselves digitally, how in print, how in real life?

The space – both the RGB colour space and the real space of the gallery – play a decisive role in the conception of the works for the exhibition. The paintings were created specifically for the different spaces of the gallery, both in terms of the number of works and their interplay. For example, the work in the window shows a red border, which becomes visible above all when looking from the side as one passes by, or the two works in the cabinet, which hang directly opposite each other, form a kind of passageway. The colourfulness of the paintings is also reflected on the walls of the gallery in one of the rooms. The visitor enters this colour space indeed physically.

In her exhibition on the occasion of the Landsberg Prize “Charlie Mike Yankee Kilo” at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf in 2020, as well as in her room with wall painting in the context of the exhibition “Mirrors and Windows”, currently on view at Sammlung Philara – and now also in the exhibition “Romeo Golf Bravo” at VAN HORN – Sabrina Fritsch explores the aforementioned colour spaces with inimitable consistency. Following the logic of colours and their depiction, her paintings develop an overwhelming life of their own.

“Mirrors and Windows” at the Philara Collection, which directly precedes the concept of the installation at VAN HORN.

Sabrina Fritsch (*1979) is the recipient of the Landsberg Prize of the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and the Grand Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer. Her works are represented in the collections of the Museum Folkwang, Essen; Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf; Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster; Museum Wiesbaden; Sammlung Peters-Messer and Sammlung Philara, among others. She teaches as a professor of painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
